i’m anna, and it’s been a gentle start for my brand photography business this year!

I am sure you will have noticed by now that it's been a slow start to 2023…

Truthfully, though, I couldn't be more glad to have taken my time with deciding what I want to work on this year. It's meant that I've never felt so present in my work and had so much clarity on the direction my business is headed.

With that in mind, today I wanted to share my marketing goals for this year – and if you are looking to work out your own marketing goals for the season ahead, I have something for you – more info below. I really hope you enjoy!

i'm taking a blog-first approach to my marketing

For many years, I like many creatives had an Instagram-first marketing strategy. Great for Instagram's golden days, not so great for me because I found it a very draining platform for several reasons:

  • Instagram's post lifetime is only around 24 hours

  • The algorithm has had several massive overhauls in the years I've been using it

  • The number of clients it connected me with vs the hours I put in was wildly off-balance

So instead, I'm hoping to create more evergreen content for the blog, and use it as a hub and home that other channels (like Instagram, and Pinterest) link back to.

i want to treat community-building as part of my marketing

I mentioned it in this blog post, but community seems to be responsible for the vast majority of my business' leads!

  • ~26% of my clients have found me through co-working connections

  • ~36% of my clients have found me through word-of-mouth recommendations

That's a heck of a lot of clients thanks to being part of communities!

With this in mind, I'll be focusing on more efforts that involve being a valued part of a community. I'm part of two online community memberships and I'm on the quest to find my next in-person co-working space… hopefully I will find a gem here in Edinburgh!

i want to run a solo series of my podcast

I've held off from releasing more episodes of my podcast, because I have learned a few things in releasing Season 2!

The interviews have been amazing and I will definitely be returning with more, but I have learned that:

  • I bit off more than I could chew. Sure, 10 episodes a series sounded great, but it's been a huge amount of work and I don't think I can release another 10-episode series this year.

  • I want to fully edit a series first, and then release it. With Season 2 I've tried to publish as I go, having got a wee bit impatient, but it meant that I needed a mid-season break when I took my hiatus and I won't be releasing the rest of the season until it's all fully edited and ready to schedule.

  • I enjoy listening to solo series just as much as interviews. When I look at my fave podcasts, it's a 50/50 split for interview formats and solo series! I'd love to experiment with a solo series because I know I love them a lot as a listener.
